While we generally recommend using a dedicated Wi-Fi network or router for updates, it is possible to update your Altion regulator using a smartphone hotspot if no other internet connection is available.
Note: This procedure requires specific settings on your phone to ensure the regulator can connect and maintain the connection during the update process.
- A smartphone (iPhone or Android) with an active cellular data plan.
- Ensure your phone is updated to the latest software version.
- Your Altion regulator powered on.
- A separate device (laptop, tablet, or another phone) to access the regulator's configuration page.
- Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot.
- Enable Allow Others to Join.
- Note the Password: iOS requires a password for hotspots. Note the "Wi-Fi Password" displayed on this screen; you will need to enter it into the regulator settings.
- Crucial Step: Enable Maximize Compatibility. This forces the hotspot to use the 2.4GHz band, which is required for the Altion to connect reliably.
- Stay on this screen. Do not lock your phone or switch apps. The hotspot is most discoverable when this screen is open.
¶ Android Users
Settings menus vary by manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, etc.), but the key requirements are the same.
- Navigate to your Hotspot & Tethering settings (usually under Network & Internet or Connections).
- Enable the Wi-Fi Hotspot.
- Crucial Step: Configure the AP Band to 2.4 GHz.
- Note: Some newer phones default to 5 GHz or 6 GHz, which the Altion cannot see. Look for a setting labeled "Band", "AP Band", or "Maximize Compatibility" and ensure 2.4 GHz is selected.
- Note your hotspot name and password.
- Connect your configuration device (laptop/tablet) to the Altion's Wi-Fi network (
Revatek-XXX).
- Open the configuration page at
http://regulator.local or http://192.168.0.1.
- Navigate to the Network section.
- Select External Wi-Fi.
- Click Scan.
- Select your phone's hotspot name from the list.
- Enter your hotspot password.
- Enable Updates: Scroll to the Software update section and ensure Automatic updates or Revatek Connect is enabled. This is required for the device to connect to Revatek Connect and receive the update.
- Submit the configuration.
- The regulator will restart and attempt to connect to your hotspot.
- Keep your phone awake. For iPhone users, stay on the Personal Hotspot settings screen. For Android users, ensure the phone does not go to sleep or kill the hotspot process to save battery.
- Do Not Restart: The device may pause for ~3 minutes during the update. Do not restart or power off the device until the blue network LED stops blinking.
- Monitor the update progress on the dashboard if possible, or wait for the blue LED to stop blinking (indicating the update is finished).
- Wait for Restart: After the blue LED stops blinking, the device will restart. This typically takes up to two minutes.
- If the regulator fails to connect, ensure "Maximize Compatibility" (iPhone) or "2.4 GHz Band" (Android) is enabled.
- Ensure your phone screen stays on.
- Network Reset Only (Firmware 20250916+): If you lose connection and cannot reconnect, and your firmware is version 20250916 or newer, a quick double-tap of the button on the right side of the Altion will reset the network settings. This causes it to create its own network (
Revatek-XXX) once again, allowing you to connect to the device at 192.168.0.1 or regulator.local while preserving your configuration.
- Factory Reset: For older firmware, or to completely reset your Altion to factory settings, hold down the button on the right side of the Altion for >15 seconds. The LED will continue to blink until the device restarts and completes the reset process. This will reset network settings and all configuration.
